What Separates Puerto Pollensa From The Rest?

On the other side of Majorca from Palma sits the seaside town of Puerto Pollensa, a fishing town where you’re now more likely to see luxury yachts than fishing boats, although there are still a few colourful ships bobbing about and supplying the famous fish restaurants. In the past 50 years since tourism really took off in Majorca developments in Pollensa have mostly taken place in the port area, if you were coming to visit as a tourist staying in a hotel this is undoubtedly the area where you would be staying. If, on the other hand you’re staying in holiday lettings such as a villa or apartment you’re more likely to stay a little out of the town centre

The Roman town of Pollensa itself lies five kilometres inland and is certainly worth visiting as part of your trip to the Puerto Pollensa area. Seeing the villas in Puerto Pollensa really gives a sense of the history of the island, something that’s easy to forget when you’re staying somewhere so modern. During the high season there are an abundance of shops, boutiques, bars and cafes which are hugely popular with tourists, after around October through, quite a proportion of them shut their doors until around Easter the next year. This mustn’t concern you if you’re visiting off peak though as the ones that stay open are those that cater for the Majorcan residents and have a bit more of a ‘real’ feel about them. If you get the chance to get out of the bay area and turn your gaze inland it’s impossible not to notice the Sierra de Tramunta mountain range which surrounds the bay to the north, west and south. If you take a hike into the hills you’ll get to see the bay from a fantastic perspective, the views back over the town are simply stunning, you’ll also see many of the other historic villas in Alcudia region. You should always make sure to take a guide book with your though, these map the trails and also let you know what you need to take along with you.

Because of the port’s fishing history there are a number of extremely good seafood restaurants in the town, actually, many of them are claimed to be the best on the island but if you have kids, and we all know how choosy they can be when it comes to food, there’s a Burger King on the seafront if you’re looking for something that bit more familiar.
